我发现和网友聊天时，他有时用"government"，有时用"the authorities"，而我喜欢说"government"，"local government"，但感觉有时用"the authorities”是更贴切些，到底是怎么区别的呢，特意到剑桥的在线字典查了一下：

比如，广州政府规定亚运会期间买刀要实名制，这里用"the authorities"就合适些。说到政府腐败，就是government.
另外，government缩写是govt,或者gov't，我以前把它写成gov.，后来发现它是governor的缩写。
